The elevated plateau of the Atherton Tableland is located 93.5 kilometres (58 m) southwest of Cairns City. Thanks to its elevation (between 500 and 1,280 metres (1,640 and 4,200 ft.) high) and volcanic soils, this thriving region is highly fertile, with rolling farmlands, lush tropical rainforests and a number of stunning geological wonders.

The Atherton Tablelands offer so much to visitors and the area is also an excellent accommodation base from which to branch out and explore other nearby regions, with a variety of options ranging from caravan parks to bed and breakfasts, eco lodges, welcoming inns and luxury retreats. The region’s many farming operations mean that the local wining and dining options are always stunning and the area is often referred to as the ‘food bowl of the tropics’.

There are attractions and activities within the Atherton Tablelands to suit all tastes, from rainforest walks along the waterfall circuits, volcanic wonders (Mt Hypipamee Crater, Undara Lava Tubes), Clean, clear waterways and dams (Barron River, Lake Tinaroo, Barrine and Eacham Lakes) and other marvels, such as the Curtain Fig Tree, Broomfield Swamp and Paronella Park, to name but a few. Almost all of these areas are teeming with amazing native wildlife, including many endangered or rare species.

The diverse environment of the Atherton Tablelands is perfect for visitors hoping to experience a number of environments in the one trip and the ability to experience this vast area by air, land or on the water is a definite bonus. Whatever you choose to do while visiting, you can be sure of finding the perfect activities to create the ideal, memorable holiday!
